Cupar actor Jock Ferguson in the guise of King Robert the Bruce has announced a gift for the youngsters of Fife.
He is donating a DVD to all Fife schools. Created by his companies Herald Events and Herald Films, it depicts Bruce’s Coronation ceremony at Scone and was filmed at the king’s last resting place, Dunfermline Abbey.
Intended to help teachers with projects on the Wars of Independence, the DVD also features a half-hour audio play, Robert Bruce, King of Scots, which is pitched at teachers who may have been influenced by Hollywood myths about the king.
In the play Bishop William Lamberton of St Andrews tells of his friendship with the Bruce and William Wallace.
“We wanted it to be a tool to educate in a different medium, in a lively way by using modern methods to assist the teachers and inspire the children to take an interest in our glorious history,” said Jock.
Herald Films are waiving copyright on the DVD and encouraging teachers to make copies for children to take home with them. The company is also providing a script for children.
Jock said the venture was made possible with funding from Celebrating Fife 2010.
The DVD will be launched at a free family event in the Tryst Centre in Dunfermline’s Abbeyview on Saturday from 1-3pm.
