Thousands take to the streets for aquatic-themed Dunfermline Children’s Gala parade

There was something fishy going on in Dunfermline at the weekend.
But that was down to thousands of school children who took to Dunfermline Children’s Gala parade’s aquatic theme of Under the Sea like fish to water on Saturday.
The first children’s gala took place over a century before, setting the template for an event which is now the largest of its kind in Scotland.
Last year over 3000 primary school children took part in the parade, watched by more than 15,000 people.
It started in 1902 when Dunfermline Co-operative Society held its first gala.
The following year Dunfermline-born philanthropist Andrew Carnegie and his wife paid for the gala, which paraded down the High Street to the Dunfermline Cricket Club grounds.
But by 1904, with Pittencrieff Park now bought by Carnegie for the town, the parade ended in the glen as it still does to this day.
Nowadays a hardworking committee and scores of volunteers work all year to ensure the gala and afternoon of events and festivities goes ahead.Click here for a full photo gallery
