A baby meerkat which captured the hearts of visitors to St Andrews Aquarium has died.
Aquarium staff said they were mourning the sad loss of Piper, the first baby born to meerkat couple Kate and Wills.
In recent weeks Piper, who was born on March 2, had demonstrated signs that he was suffering from malformation of the joints in his front legs.
Acting on veterinary advice that he was likely to be experiencing considerable pain which was expected to worsen rather than improve, aquarium bosses made the difficult decision to say goodbye to the much loved member of the aquarium family.
Piper had become quite a celebrity in his short life, commanding many column inches, as well as YouTube notoriety, for his noble position as Kate and Wills’s first born.
He was named by Marc Penman, a pupil at South Parks Primary in Glenrothes, following a competition.
Aquarium manager John Mace, said, “Piper is going to be very sadly missed by all of us. We are all terribly, terribly sad at his loss.
“He was quite a little character, very noisy and everyone who came to see him just thought he was adorable. He has certainly left his mark on St Andrews Aquarium.”
