Police in Fife are pleading for information after a man was found unconscious in the street just hours after enjoying a night out with friends.
Detectives admitted they have no idea how the man who remains in a life-threatening condition in hospital came to receive what has been described as a ”serious” head injury.
It is understood the male, who has not been named, was ”not drunk” when he left his friends in a Dunfermline bar at around midnight on Friday. However, just four hours later he was discovered lying in the street unconscious.
Detectives are trying to piece together the ”missing hours” but admit they have no idea how he came to be injured.
They are not even sure if he was assaulted and hope members of the public will help them to make progress in what so far remains a mystery.
Police said the man was found on Aberdour Road near the junction with Lawrence Street just before 4am on Saturday.
He had last been seen at around midnight drinking with friends in the city’s Barley Sheaf pub. It is understood he left the premises on his own.
Detectives confirmed that, when discovered some four hours later, he had a serious head injury. He was rushed to hospital and later operated on at the Western General in Edinburgh where he remains in a serious condition.
Detective Sergeant Ross Davidson said: ”We currently have no idea how this man came to be in this state. He was drinking earlier in the evening but was said not to be drunk when he left his friends.
”We are keen to piece together his movements in the subsequent four hours.”
He added: ”We do not yet know whether he was assaulted or how he came to be injured.
”We are appealing for any one who may have seen the man, or who has any information, to contact us directly on 0845 6005702 or through Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.”
