A trainee barber hid drugs in a tub of hair putty in an attempt to smuggle them into T in the Park.
Fife teenager Thomas Brunton, a champion boxer, admitted being concerned in the supply of the class C drug 1-Phenylpiperazine similar to ecstasy at T in the Park, Balado, Kinross, on July 8.
Security staff carrying out bag searches at the campsite discovered a total of 71 tablets, with a street value of more than £200, hidden in three small bags inside a tub of hair product in Brunton’s bag.
Depute fiscal John Malpass told Perth Sheriff Court that police were immediately summoned and Brunton, of Glenlyon Place, Leven, was arrested and detained.
”He spent his 18th birthday in a cell, rather than with his friends,” Mr Malpass added.
Solicitor Jim Litterick said his client had intended for the drugs, made illegal in 2009, to be used by himself and two friends.
”He was 17 at the time of the offence and has no previous convictions,” he added. ”He has no long-standing issue with drugs or alcohol and regrets his actions.
”He is currently working as a trainee barber but wants to pursue a career as a naval engineer in the future. Additionally he is a promising junior boxer, training five times a week, with a Scottish title to his name.”
Sheriff Robert McCreadie said: ”I accept it was an unfortunate incident in an otherwise unblemished career.
”It is a serious matter to be concerned in the supply of any drug and the fact this drug was found in hair putty shows it was deliberately concealed. The accused knew the drug was illegal.
”I note that you work full time and intend to have a good career, but you must realise adverse conduct has repercussions.”
Sheriff McCreadie warned that custody had been an option, but he instead imposed a community payback order, requiring Brunton to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work in the community.
