A woman was left in a ”critical condition” and two others were seriously injured after a road crash in Fife on Wednesday morning.
All the casualties were rushed to hospital after a head-on collision which forced the closure of a stretch of the A92 Kirkcaldy to Dundee road.
The crash between a Toyota and a Mazda happened outside Freuchie, near the local garage, at about 9.15am.
The Mazda ended up in a nearby field and both vehicles had to be cut open by firefighters to remove the trapped occupants.
The driver of the Toyota Yaris was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy and was said to be in a critical condition.
A male passenger and the female driver of the Mazda were both taken to Ninewells Hospital with serious injuries.
The road was closed for a several hours between Ladybank and the New Inn roundabout to allow investigation to be completed.
Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale, head of road policing with Fife Constabulary, said: ”We are investigating the cause of this crash and I would appeal to anyone who may have seen the collision, or the immediate aftermath, or anyone who was in this area about 9.15am and may have seen either vehicle, to contact the police on 0845 600 5702.”
Only two months ago a 40-year-old man was left fighting for his life after his car was thrown into a field in a collision with a Land Rover on the same stretch of road.
After being cut from his own vehicle the man was rushed to Ninewells hospital having suffered a badly broken leg, pelvic injuries and head injuries.
