Just under 70 jobs could be culled after bosses at a well-known Fife dairy depot announced details of a “30-day consultation” with staff.
Robert Wiseman Dairies said the decision to consult with staff at its Cupar operation had been taken as the firm attempts to balance “facilities with operational requirements.”
Politicians have branded the development “devastating” and demanded talks with company officials.
A statement released by Robert Wiseman Dairies confirmed a statutory consultation has begun. Staff are now being asked to “make their views known” over the next 30 days.
The statement makes it clear ultimate closure is an option and states “some” staff may be offered the opportunity to transfer to other depots. However there is no indication of how many posts that could involve.
“Wiseman will work closely with union representatives during the consultation, which affects 68 posts at the depot,” the statement said. “In the event of closure some staff may be offered the opportunity to transfer to distribution roles at the company’s Aberdeen and Whitburn depots.”No decision as yetGroup operations director at Robert Wiseman Dairies Martyn Mulcahy stressed that no decision would be taken before the conclusion of the consultation period.
Mr Mulcahy said, “While we continue to make gains in growing our business in Scotland, it is important that we match our facilities with our future operational requirements.
“It is right that we properly review the viability of this site going forward. Our intention is to use the next month to consult with staff representatives before arriving at a decision.”
The formal consultation process will end on February 25, at which point the company will complete a “strategic review” before arriving at a final decision.
North East Fife MSP Iain Smith told The Courier any loss of the long-established venue would represent a bitter blow for the area.
“This is disappointing news,” he said. “It will undoubtedly make for an anxious month for employees at the depot.
“I hope the company will take a long term view of the depots role rather than looking for quick cuts as once it is gone it is very difficult to bring back.
“I am seeking an urgent meeting with the company to discuss their proposals and am available to any employees affected by this.”Robert Wiseman Dairies procures, processes and distributes almost a third of all fresh milk consumed in Britain.
