Historic buildings in Anstruther are to be given a facelift after Culture Minister Fiona Hyslop announced details of a £500,000 funding package.
The cash will come from Historic Scotland’s Conservation Area Regeneration Scheme (CARS).
In Anstruther the cash will help to support the wider Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI). Buildings including the Hew Scott Hall, St Nicholas Tower and Anstruther Wester Town Hall will all be sensitively restored. The Murray Library and derelict Masonic Hall are also set to benefit.
“When we speak about regeneration it is important that we do not lose sight of what makes a place unique or special,” Ms Hyslop said. “These grants are specifically for areas that have a historic heart to them.
“The successful projects (including the one in Anstruther) are centring attention on buildings that represent something about the character of these towns. These are landmarks that people have grown up with and they are part of identity of the community.”
The minister said the cash would make a vital difference at a tough time.
“It is hugely important that at difficult economic times grants like these are there to support ambition to make our homes, villages and towns better places in which to live and work,” she said. “I am delighted that in the six years since this grants programme was launched £16 million has been invested in revitalising our conservation areas.
“Some 22 local authorities have seized the opportunity to breath new life into some of the most historic architecture in our country.”
