Thousands of motorists each day face four weeks of disruption as roadworks are carried out on part of the busy A92 that runs through Fife.
Transport Scotland is spending £300,000 in maintaining and improving the trunk road just north of Freuchie.
The project, between Easter Lathrisk Farm and Eden Bridge, will mean traffic lights will be in operation from Monday next week.
In addition, the B937 between the A92 and the C57 Shiells Road will be closed, with traffic diverted via the A92 and B939.
Work will involve infilling the roadside ditch, installing an improved surface water drainage system and reconstructing the carriageway edge.
A temporary speed limit of 30mph will be in place over the 300 metres of A92 under control and traffic may be restricted to 10mph at times so that it can be taken through in convoy.
Transport Scotland said the speed limits and the closure of the B937 were necessary for the safety of the workforce and the travelling public.DiversionTo minimise delays, motorists travelling to and from north-east Fife are being encouraged to use the A914 route between the New Inn Roundabout and Cupar.
Eddie Ross, consultancy manager of trunk road operating company, BEAR Scotland Limited, said, “The A92 is a major trunk road used by around 12,000 motorists each day in this location.
“The existing ditch reduces the support given to the carriageway, which has led to frequent repair of road failures.
“This project will help to ensure that this section will continue to operate safely and effectively and will help to reduce future maintenance costs.
“We have liaised with Fife Council and Fife Constabulary to ensure the works can be carried out safely and efficiently and that the traffic management arrangements employed will minimise inconvenience to the travelling public.
“We would ask that road users plan their journeys carefully in advance using www.trafficscotland.org and allow extra time for journeys.
“In the interests of safety, motorists should also pay attention to traffic signs and show due care while passing through the works.”
BEAR Scotland will supervise the roadworks which will be carried out by Wills Bros.
