One of the rescuers of a couple trapped when a falling tree crushed their car near Milnathort during Monday’s storm says they had a miraculous escape.

The occupants a 48-year-old woman and a 49-year-old man were taken to Queen Margaret Hospital in Dunfermline following the accident but amazingly escaped serious injury.

The tree crashed on to the roof of their car as they drove along the A91 Milnathort to Yetts O’ Muckhart road, a couple of miles from Milnathort, shortly after 1.30pm.

The damage left both occupants trapped, although the woman was able to call the emergency services on her mobile phone.

As she did so, other motorists came to her aid including a workman, who declined to be named but said he and his colleagues had feared the worst.

“When we came across the accident, if I’m honest we didn’t think anyone was going to get out of the wreckage alive,” he said. “When we moved closer, however, we found that both occupants appeared to be OK, if a little bloodied, and they were able to ask us for our assistance.

“Though we were a little worried about doing too much before the emergency services arrived we began to lift some of the heavy debris from the vehicle’s bonnet.”

The good Samaritan added, “Another motorist appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, to help us and he was just brilliant, though I never even got his name. He must have been their guardian angel because he really seemed to know what he was doing.

“After we managed to lift some of the weight from the car’s bonnet the occupants were able to free their legs and the other guy was able to help them wriggle free.”

Police, the fire and rescue service and the ambulance service were soon in attendance and the casualties were treated at the scene.

The female occupant of the car suffered cuts and bruises, while the man sustained a broken wrist, broken ribs and lacerations to his shoulder.
