Thousands of visitors will descend on Kirkcaldy this week with the return of the Links Market.
The annual event which sees the Esplanade transformed into a riot of lights and noise was thrown open to the public at 2pm on Wednesday.
Fair-goers will be treated to the usual mix of high-octane thrill rides, game stalls, and food outlets.
Fife Depute Provost Kay Morrison described it as “the best street fair in the world” while cutting the ribbon at the opening ceremony.
Declaring the fair open after a 10 second countdown, she apologised for the traditional rainy market weather and added: “Don’t blame me!”
Run by the Showmen’s Guild, it is expected that more than 100,000 people will join in the fun.
The Guild’s national president, John Culine, wished those coming along well, stating: “I want you to enjoy the fair, but above all I want you to be safe at the fair.”
Lasting for six days, and stretching more than a mile, the market can trace its origins back to 1304.
Then just a street market for local traders, it has grown through the years to be the largest funfair in Europe.
The market is often seen as the start of the season for the Scottish showmen, with it being a good indication of how the rest of the year will go.
Security is once again being provided by G4S, with the public being encouraged to enjoy themselves but to take care.
Traffic diversions are in place through Nicol Street, Marshall Road and Bridge Street, while parking restrictions will also be in place and enforced for the duration of the market.
