Dunfermline MSP Cara Hilton is to stand down as a councillor.
The Labour politician had already said she would go, allowing a by-election to take place to coincide with next May’s general election.
The news comes as parents at Dunfermline’s Pitcorthie Primary face up to the closure of the school.
Mrs Hilton, who won a by-election campaign caused by the resignation of shamed MSP Bill Walker, said: “During the by-election campaign I made a commitment to the Pitcorthie parents that I would stay as councillor for Dunfermline South until the future of the school is resolved.”
She added: “I gave a commitment that I would work with parents to fight for Pitcorthie and I have done so.
“I will now be working with the parents and the schools to make sure that the additional resources and planning that needs to be put in place to ensure the smooth transition for children to the new schools is carried out.
“I want to make sure that there will be full consultation and involvement of the Pitcorthie parents and that this is carried out over the next few months.”
