A snap of a Burntisland man proposing to his girlfriend on the Forth Road Bridge went viral as amateur sleuths sought to identify the pair.

Kirsty MacDonald took the picture of the proposal and uploaded it to Facebook appealing for information on who the couple were so she could share the image with them.

The appeal said: “Do you recognise the couple in this picture? I took this photo today (09/11/14) at 4pm on the Forth Road Bridge.

“As you can see from the photo the man is on one knee and proposing. So exciting because she said yes!

“I would like to see if this photo could reach them. The couple headed towards the South Queensferry side of the bridge.

“Please share this photo on the hope it reaches the happy couple.”

Her appeal was shared more than 6,000 times and within hours the happy couple had been identified as Paul Brannigan and his partner of two years Hazel Andrews.

Mother-of-one Hazel said the couple were “over the moon” that the picture was taken.

Paul proposed on the couple’s two year anniversary and got down on one knee on the Lovelock wall on the bridge, where couples place padlocks as a symbol of their relationship.

The couple intend to marry in two years’ time when their son Oliver will be two and a half years old.
