Plan for new Stratheden Hospital unit progressing

Plans to replace Stratheden Hospital’s intensive psychiatric care unit are progressing.

Last February NHS Fife was invited to submit a full business case for a replacement unit to the Scottish Government.

Pending formal approval early next year, the building work is due to begin in the spring and be completed the following year.

Work has been undertaken over recent years to modernise large areas of the Stratheden Hospital site, building new facilities like Elmview and Muirview and completing a major refurbishment of the Radernie ward.

Construction of a new intensive psychiatric care unit has been identified as the next priority and the latest phase of the development will see the existing unit replaced with a new facility.

The replacement of the existing unit with purpose-built accommodation is seen as a crucial part of the strategy to improve mental health services in Fife. Plans are in development to construct a new, eight-bed unit on the north-eastern part of the hospital site, adjacent to the Radernie ward.

The design and construction of the new unit has been strongly influenced by patients and staff across Fife.

The design aims to ensure patients can be cared for in a tranquil, therapeutic setting, so aiding a speedier recovery and earlier discharge.

The layout will allow for more privacy for patients, while maximising the use of natural light and ensuring a more homely environment.

Each patient will have their own ensuite bedroom, while also being able to spend time together with visitors in private rooms or in the landscaped internal courtyard.

NHS Fife General Manager Mary Porter said: “Improving mental health facilities is a key priority for NHS Fife.

“The provision of modern hospital environments which offer privacy and maintain dignity is essential in providing good patient care.

“Construction of the new unit will allow us to continue improving mental health services and ensure that our patients can receive high-quality care in a modern, safe, secure and therapeutic environment.”
