Cupar Foodbank has been “overwhelmed” by food and financial contributions during its first Christmas.
Foodbank manager Fiona Findlay said thanks to the generosity of the community, it had been able to provide enough food hampers to feed 82 adults and 87 children throughout Fife this festive season.
She said: “We were also able to provide gifts to the children thanks to Tesco staff and customers who organised a toy donation point in store.
“We have been overwhelmed by the support we have received, both through food and financial donations.
“Individuals, businesses, schools and the Cupar and surrounding area churches have all contributed to making a real difference to many families this Christmas.”
Fiona said the many dedicated volunteers who helped to make this happen were “extremely humbled by the immense gratitude” they received from those families who received a hamper.
She added: “Many families were overcome with astonishment and emotion at receiving what most of us would take for granted at Christmas. Whilst it is often made out that people using foodbanks are scroungers, I would like to share that many people who have had the need of the foodbank return to donate food once they have managed to get back on their feet again.
“Some families who received a hamper returned items to the foodbank, stating that they didn’t need so much food and wanted to make sure that others in need could receive something.
“However, our work is not yet complete, Quaker Oats staff have donated 100 winter coats for distribution through the foodbank. Any families or individuals in need of a warm winter coat should call at the foodbank from January 5, when we will be giving out coats.”
