Seven wonders of Fife to get you out of doors this winter

An outdoor challenge has been launched to take in Fife’s seven or even more natural wonders.

Outdoor Fife is encouraging locals and visitors to get out and about.

While the seven natural wonders of the world, by popular choice, includes the likes of the Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, Mount Everest and Victoria Falls, where are Fife’s equivalent?

The team has made its own suggestions but is keen to hear from others, too, to find out their favourite places for walking, cycling and getting in touch with nature and local heritage.

The top seven include:

* A wintry walk in the Lomonds as West Lomond is the highest spot in Fife, measuring 522m (1,713 ft);

* Nature watching at Tentsmuir to spot sea eagles and seals;

* Cycling around Balbirnie Park a 10km ride suitable for all ages and abilities;

* Taking in the sea air at Elie on the Blue Flag beach at Ruby Bay;

* A Hollywood moment at St Monans or Pittenweem, where The Railway Man and The Winter Guest were filmed;

* Walking, cycling, sailing or playing at Lochore Meadows in Lochgelly, Fife’s most popular free attraction;

* Sharing a picnic and watching the squirrels in Dunfermline’s Pittencrieff Park.

Outdoor Fife chairman Steve Brazendale said it was no surprise Fife had been voted the best outdoor destination for seven years in a row by Scottish Natural Heritage.

“We have natural beauty and wildlife, activities for all types of interests and heritage that takes us from historical buildings to sporting landmarks like the world’s oldest tennis court at Falkland Palace,” he said.

“We want to make Fife a destination for day visitors as well as those who come for a longer stay.

“Tourism doesn’t stop when the temperature drops and families, people interested in challenging sports, nature lovers and those looking for a day out, a place to eat and something fun to do will find plenty of options in Fife,” he added.

“Winter tourism is definitely a growing trend and we are keen to welcome locals and visitors all year round.”

A new series of route cards have been launched to show cycling visitors how to see the best of Fife. There are nine altogether, including Tentsmuir Forest, Crail to Kingsbarns, Dunnikier Park and Pitcairlie Hill and Pitmedden Forest.

To help people decide what they can do for a day out there is a website, www.outdoorfife.com.
