Warning fly-tipping in Fife is a ‘growing problem’

People have been warned of the consequences of fly-tipping.

The move comes after officers in Fife Council’s environmental enforcement team attended two cases of fly-tipping, at recycling points in Rosyth and Oakley this week. They plan to issue 30 fixed-penalty notices as a result.

The council has stated that it will not tolerate “inconsiderate behaviour.”

Pat Callaghan, executive spokesman for environment and transport, said: “Dumping rubbish in public spaces is not only unpleasant but it’s breaking the law.

“It’s a growing problem that’s costing councils across Scotland more than £50 million a year to clean up.

“Here in Fife, we treat fly-tipping very seriously and we’ll vigorously pursue offenders, taking court action where necessary. Fines for fly-tipping start at £200 but can increase to £40,000.

“The council has 11 recycling centres throughout Fife where people can dispose of their household waste for free. There are nearly 400 recycling points in all areas of Fife for people to recycle cans, plastics, glass, paper and cardboard.

“Recycling points are not for general household waste and anyone caught dumping such items will receive a fixed-penalty notice.”
