The looming closure of a Kirkcaldy DIY store is causing unrest among staff.
Homebase announced in July it would be shutting up shop at its Fife Central Retail Park base, placing 30 jobs at risk.
Six months on, however, staff are still none the wiser about when the store will close for good.
The DIY chain has not disclosed a reason for the closure but it is thought rental costs, along with its proximity to sister stores in Dunfermline and Glenrothes, may be key factors.
Another possible issue is the fact rival DIY store B&Q is also located in the retail park, just yards away.
It is understood lifestyle retailer the Range will eventually take over the Homebase premises, potentially preventing some job losses but the company has yet to officially confirm this.
An anonymous source told The Courier Homebase staff are increasingly frustrated with management for not keeping them informed and feel “very much in the dark”.
“Staff have been asking when the shop will eventually close and keep being put off, which isn’t fair because they obviously need to plan ahead,” the source said.
“Everyone has bills and mortgages to pay and they just want to know when their last pay cheque will beit’s about time the company started enlightening their employees.”
The Courier contacted Homebase and asked whether there were any obstacles causing the delay in closing the store. The company did not offer any details.
A spokesman stated all he could say at this stage was that the store was expected to close following talks with the landlord.
He said: “Following a consultation with colleagues, Homebase can confirm that its store in Kirkcaldy will close, with a date to be confirmed following the completion of talks with the landlord.
“Discussions are being held with colleagues to find alternative employment in neighbouring Homebase and Argos stores.”
