It is one of Kirkcaldy’s most prominent public spaces, but now plans have been unveiled to bring the town’s Memorial Gardens out of the shade and into the light.
Detailed proposals have been revealed that could result in £25,000 worth of lighting installed to illuminate the area during the winter months.
Councillors will discuss the project next week.
Plans to improve the appearance of the Memorial Gardens have taken on a greater impetus following the town’s success in this year’s Beautiful Scotland awards.
The garden’s floral displays, arranged by volunteer group Growing Kirkcaldy, were central to the town winning a Gold Award and winning the Small Cities section of the competition.
Alice Soper from the group has welcomed the possibility of installing new lights, saying: “I think it’s wonderful and I’m really behind the plan.
“We have to remember that the gardens are a place for remembrance and reflection, but they are also beautiful and I hope the lights will add to that.”
If funding is approved then it is hoped that the lighting could be in place by November, with 12 trees set to be dressed with LED minibulbs.
In a report prepared for councillors ahead of their meeting on Wednesday, Paul Vaughan, an area management senior manager at Fife Council, said: “Winter lighting in the Memorial Gardens will provide a significant visual enhancement to this area.
“Having this lighting display in the winter and floral displays in the summer will result in the Memorial Gardens being a feature all year round.
“Further improvements to the gardens will not only augment the amenity of the area, but also provide an attractive walking route from the railway station through to the town centre and waterfront.”
