Memorial marks key site in Kirkcaldy’s industrial past

A permanent memorial to mark an important part of Kirkcaldy’s industrial heritage has been unveiled at the site of the company’s original factory.
The Melville Brodie Engineering Company employed hundreds of people during its 102-year existence, closing in 1971.
The Pathhead factory produced the tools which enabled Fife’s mining and manufacturing industries to operate and helped with the production of coal, linen, paper and linoleum.
A group of ex-workers, known as the Retired Melville Brodie Club, were behind the plans to erect a metre-high memorial at the site of the original factory, which stood at the crossroads of Junction, Smeaton, Factory and Maltings Roads.
