The generosity of a Perth businessman with a love of the sea and sailing has been celebrated at Wormit Boating Club.
A new rescue boat, donated by the late Jimmie Cairncross, was launched on the Tay during the event.
Jimmie, and his brother Alastair ran a family jewellery business on St John Street, Perth, until Alastair’s death in 1988.
It was no surprise that when he retired, Jimmie formed his Charitable Trust to support local projects.
Jimmie’s executors and trustees have now been able to fulfil his final wish on three occasions.
In May 2009, rescue boat the Jimmie was handed over to the members of Loch Tummel Sailing Club.
Then, in August 2011, with the Duke of Edinburgh as guest of honour, the Jimmie Cairncross was handed over to the RNLI at South Queensferry.
On Sunday, the Jimmie Too was launched, watched by Trustees of the Jimmie Cairncross Charitable Trust and members of the club.
Jimmie was born in Perth in 1920 and educated at Sharp’s Institute and Perth Academy. He went on to give distinguished service as a naval lieutenant during the Second World War.
When he returned home, Jimmie became a member of Perth Sailing Club. He was elected Commodore in 1957 and remained a member until he died.
