Golf fans will have another chance to hail some of Europe’s Ryder Cup stars at this week’s Alfred Dunhill Links Championship.
Fresh from leading his side to victory over the USA, European captain Paul McGinley will be back in playing action in a field that also includes Gleneagles heroes Rory McIlroy, Martin Kaymer, Victor Dubuisson and Stephen Gallacher.
In addition to McIlroy and Kaymer, other major champions include Darren Clarke, Ernie Els, Padraig Harrington, Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.
The pro-am contest will also feature the usual array of celebrities from the world of film, TV and sport.
The A-list group will be among the amateurs taking part in the tournament from Thursday until Sunday.
The line-up includes football stars Sir Bobby Charlton, Jamie Redknapp, Johan Cruyff, Ruud Gullit, Michael Ballack, Gianfranco Zola and Luis Figo.
They will be joined by film and TV stars Hugh Grant, Greg Kinnear and Kyle MacLachlan and rock music legends Don Felder of the Eagles, Huey Lewis and Tico Torres from Bon Jovi.
Cricketers in the field include England’s Sir Ian Botham and Allan Lamb, Australian spin bowling wizard Shane Warne and South Africa’s Mark Boucher.
Among the other sports stars competing are Olympic rowing legend Sir Steve Redgrave, former British tennis number one Tim Henman, Formula One world champion Damon Hill, recently retired Irish rugby legend Brian O’Driscoll and downhill ski ace Franz Klammer.
The championship is played over three of the world’s best known and respected links courses the Old Course at St Andrews, the Championship Course at Carnoustie and the highly regarded Kingsbarns Golf Links.
Entry is free at all three courses on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, with a ticket price of £20 (concessionary £15) for the final day’s play over the Old Course on Sunday.
Entry for under 16s and students is free.
