Fife mother says drug addict neighbours forced her to move

A Kirkcaldy mother is claiming nightmare neighbours are ruining her family’s life.

Police have been called to the problem property in Shetland Place 33 times this year alone.

The woman who did not wish to be identified for fear of reprisals has had her car vandalised and was finally driven out of her home when a brick was thrown through her window.

Thoughts for the safety of her two children aged five and 10 drove her to abandon the house and seek refuge away from the threatening neighbours.

She said: “It’s been going on for six years now. The neighbours are into heroin and alcohol, making noise and being a nuisance at all hours of the night.

“They have all kinds of visitors; they’ve turned the close into a slum with mess, vomit and disorder.”

When approached, the residents at the problem property denied being drug users, and claimed friends of theirs who visit their address were the cause of problems.

They claimed these other people were drug users and intimidated them and their neighbours, but did not identify the troublemakers.

Things came to a head in August when paint thinner was poured over the family’s new vehicle, damaging the windscreen and bonnet. Later, their front-room window was shattered.

Police confirmed anti-social behaviour at the address is the subject of an ongoing investigation, in partnership with Fife Council.

A police spokesperson said: “We are aware of this address and have been very successful in the past in shutting down addresses like this in Kirkcaldy.

“We are working to resolve this situation in conjunction with Fife Council and our other partners.”

The family is now living in a single bedroom in a relative’s house. Fife Council confirmed that while the troubled home is vacant, the couple will not be liable for rent at the property.

The council also confirmed that the housing investigations team is looking into the complaints.
