A Glenrothes community council could be forced to “dissolve” unless it can attract more members.
Peter Scobie, the chairman of Pitteuchar, Stenton and Finglassie Community Council, has appealed to residents to come forward or face the possibility of losing the local body.
Numbers have dropped substantially in recent months and there is a real possibility that the community council will be forced to disband if new blood cannot be attracted.
“We have very low numbers,” Mr Scobie told The Courier. “Four of our members are leaving because of illness and another person is leaving because of family commitments.
“At the moment, if everyone who says that they will participate does then that gives us nine people, which is on the borderline.
“If we get that then the community council stays, but if we don’t then we will have to dissolve it. If that happens, we will have to wait a couple of months and then get 20 people.”
The appeal for new members comes ahead of next month’s community council elections, to be held throughout Fife.
However, nomination papers for these have to be submitted to Fife Council by next Thursday, meaning that time is of the essence in Mr Scobie’s efforts to recruit more members.
The group meets regularly throughout the year, although Mr Scobie said anybody wishing to volunteer will only be required to help when and where they can.
“It’s very important that we keep the community council going,” he added.
“There is a lot going on in the area at the moment and we’ve slowly turned the community council around in the past four years.
“A lot of people think that it’s the same as being a Fife councillor but it’s not. It’s voluntary and if you can only offer half an hour to work on a project then so be it, and the more people that we have then the less work there is for everyone.”
