Police are continuing their investigation into an indecent assault on a female student at St Andrews University.
It came as St Andrews University confirmed it was liaising with police and offering “appropriate support” to the student involved.
Police Scotland revealed on Thursday evening that it is investigating an alleged assault on a lone woman which happened in St Andrews in the early hours of Thursday.
The incident took place about 1am when the 18-year-old woman student was walking in the university grounds on a lane between the University Sports Hall and the David Russell apartments.
Police said the woman became aware of a man walking behind her, who then grabbed and indecently assaulted her. The assault lasted a very short time before the assailant ran off. The woman was uninjured but was extremely shaken by the incident.
The man is described as 5’8” 5’10” wearing a dark puffa jacket, dark tracksuit bottoms, grey beanie hat and possibly wearing gloves. He may have been of foreign appearance.
The woman had been in the central area of St Andrews with friends prior to the incident.
Chief Inspector Adrian Annandale appealed to anyone who was in the area and saw anyone matching the description of the man, or who may know his identity, to contact the Police on 101. All information will be treated with the strictest confidence.
Chief Inspector Annandale said this type of incident is rare and it is not known what the man’s motive was, however the victim was very shaken by it.
Police have reminded the public that when they are in more remote areas to be aware of their personal safety.
