An average of six motorists are caught every day in Fife driving without a seatbelt, new figures state.
Statistics presented to councillors in Glenrothes showed that in the 10-month period from April 2013 to February, a total of 2,105 drivers were stopped by police in the region.
The figures represent a 58% increase over the same period 12 months before, although police say this is due to “proactive” measures in tackling this crime.
Addressing members of Glenrothes area committee, chief inspector Nicola Shepherd warned that those motorists who continue to flout the law would be caught.
“It is astonishing given the design of modern vehicles,” she said. “The beeping would drive you insane.
“It seems as though some don’t wear seatbelts because of comfort, but the message is still out there and the numbers are still too high.”
John Beare, councillor for Glenrothes North, Leslie and Markinch, said he is baffled by any reluctance to wear a seatbelt.
“It seems completely illogical that drivers or passengers don’t wear a seatbelt,” he said.
“It is poor personal safety and I find it odd that six people are caught not wearing them every day.”
