There is a month to go until the Queen’s Baton Relay passes through Fife ahead of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.
It has been confirmed the relay will start off its day in the Kingdom at Knockhill Racing Circuit, where it will take in a few laps on a superbike.
Around 119 baton bearers will then help it make its way into Dunfermline, through Pittencrieff Park and past the abbey, and on to Inverkeithing and Dalgety Bay, where it will visit some youngsters taking part in sports at Dalgety Bay Sports Centre.
It will go through Aberdour, Burntisland and Kinghorn, where it will travel on an RNLI lifeboat to Kirkcaldy.
A special lunchtime stop will be made at the Michael Woods Sports and Leisure Centre in Glenrothes, where the finalists of this year’s Going for Gold event will be competing.
The annual competition between care homes encourages the elderly to try out a new activity to keep active.
The teams from 58 care homes across Fife are battling it out in a Walk the Commonwealth Step Count Challenge, and will be training over the next few months at New Age Kurling, carpet bowls, boccia, basketball shoots and other fun sports in preparation for the final on June 26. Later in the afternoon the baton will pass through Falkland and visit the palace before making its way to Freuchie, Cupar, Leven and Pittenweem.
It will travel along the shore in Anstruther and Cellardyke, taking in the Fisheries Museum, before heading on to St Andrews for an evening celebration.
Fife Provost Jim Leishman is calling for everyone to get behind Team Scotland, rallying athletes as they get ready to compete for medals in Glasgow.
He said: “The Queen’s baton visit is a perfect opportunity to join in on a great day out. There are lots of events taking place along the route and the baton will be passing through some great Fife landmarks. Pick your spot and get out on June 26 to support the games as the baton passes through our communities of Fife.”
He added: “I’m looking forward to the evening celebration in St Andrews, which will allow even bigger crowds to enjoy and take part in the festivities with Fife’s baton bearers.”
Details of the evening celebration, which is funded by EventScotland’s Games for Scotland 2014 programme, will be revealed soon.
