Heartless thieves have stolen a memorial to an Iraq war hero from Fife.
Police officers are appealing for information following the theft of part of the sundial from the memorial garden dedicated to Black Watch soldier Marc Ferns, which is situated in Pitteuchar, near Glenrothes.
The theft is believed to have taken place sometime between 2pm and midnight on Monday.
The money to fund the garden in Marc’s memory was raised by the local community and the Exit Centre Committee, and the crime has left the late soldier’s family and the wider community dismayed.
Private Ferns, 21, was killed in August 2004 when a roadside bomb exploded beside the armoured vehicle he was travelling in.
The special cairn of remembrance was built alongside the Exit Community Centre in Pitteuchar in 2005.
Sergeant Joanne McEwan said: “A theft of this kind is something that causes us all to question just what type of person would carry out such a despicable act of damage.
“The community came together in their grief and in support of Marc Ferns’ family to dedicate a lasting memorial to him, and the individuals responsible for this theft have caused great distress to all concerned.
“It has left many in the community shocked and disgusted.”
