Visit to Fife caves another career chapter for writer Alice Ross
ByMichael Alexander
It was a red-letter day at the Wemyss Caves when American author Alice W. Ross visited the sites she has written about in her fiction but never seen.
Alice did her research with the help of SWACS (Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society) and set the climax of her latest novel, Message in the Skye, in Jonathan’s Cave. She visited in the company of SWACS tour guide Sue Hamstead to explore the caves and see the famous ancient Pictish drawings.
Alice and her husband Tim live in South Carolina and were in Britain for a month-long holiday. Alice said: “I truly love the people and the places where I have been. It is wonderful how you can see such distances in the horizon.
“The rolling hills of Scotland, the vast lochs and glens are all so special to me. I will certainly look forward to coming back again.”
Sue added: “When people come so far to see these caves, it really brings home how important they are. We who live here all need to be vigilant in order to protect the treasure that’s on our doorstep and preserve it for future generations.”
