A set of steps in Kirkcaldy is in danger of becoming a stumbling block to shoppers unless an urgent renovation is undertaken.
Councillors heard that the Postings steps on Bell Inn Wynd are in need of an immediate upgrade to prevent pedestrians from tripping on the ageing walkway.
Members of Kirkcaldy area committee approved £95,000 of funding to renovate the route, which is used by hundreds of shoppers every day.
Constant wear and tear has resulted in high maintenance costs to keep the steps open, with much of the surface deteriorating at a rapid rate.
Despite the decaying state of the stairway, a full reconstruction was ruled out. The overall cost of such a project is estimated to be in the region of £350,000.
However, councillors did agree to renovate the area, with head of the transportation team Dr Bob McLellan saying: “Within the current period of austerity, full reconstruction is not a viable option.”
