An £8 million vision to transform the heart of Leven has been revealed.
Plans to redevelop five areas of the town to revolutionise it as a social and commercial destination have been presented to councillors.
Although the plans are merely a design concept at the moment, there are high hopes funding can be found to implement the proposals.
After the presentation, councillor Andrew Rodger said: “This is the best report that I have seen in years. I really hope that this can actually happen as Levenmouth deserves this uplift.
“I hope that council officers speak to businesses like Sainsbury’s, Argos and B&Q as there are benefits for them too.”
Five separate areas were identified for improvement by planners, most notably the Shorehead area, Promenade and the north section of the High Street.
As much as £5m to £7m could be spent on the waterfront in an effort to create a destination capable of hosting community events and encouraging greater public use.
Key to this would be more play areas for children, landscaped areas capable of attracting visitors and the removal of car parks to create areas capable of hosting festivals and events.
Proposals for Shorehead would see it regenerated into a dual-use site, capable of hosting events such as markets and community events as well as fulfilling its current role as a car park.
With an estimated cost of up to £1.7m, it is hoped developing the site could create better links between the existing High Street and retail park.
Planned street layouts on High Street could create a more pedestrian-friendly shopping environment, while revisions to Victoria Road and Aitken Street have also been proposed in an effort to create more “social spaces” in the town.
Councillor David Alexander said while he was encouraged by the designs, he wanted evidence the investment would result in more people visiting Leven.
“It’s proof that you can do anything with money,” he said.
“Levenmouth has more going for it than many other centres but the one thing that is missing are the benefits of this. How many more people will shop there?”
