A Dalgety Bay chip shop owner believes thieves ransacked his shop seeking £1,000 of cash collected for an Aberdour charity.
Tony Greco was shocked to discover his Dalgety Bay Fish Bar shop on Moray Way North had been broken into by thieves when he opened his shop.
The robbers struck some time between Sunday night and Monday morning and took cash, a laptop, sweets, ice cream and the data recorder for the CCTV cameras.
Mr Greco believes they were after money the shop and its customers raised for the Cookie Jar Foundation.
He said: “I came in on Monday and found the shop was in a mess. They took everything down as if they were looking for a safe or something.
“They broke the shutters on the back door to get in and to repair it has cost me £240.
“A week before we had a charity event. I don’t know if they picked on me because they had already been in and perhaps thought there was more money lying about.”
Mr Greco and his staff had held a special supper menu in order to help raise funds for the Cookie Jar Foundation.
The supper sales raised £857.98 and additional donations made in the shop brought the final total to £1,008.98.
The Cookie Jar Foundation was established in memory of Christopher Cookie Coutts, who passed away after a long fight with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma last year at the age of 19.
Mr Greco added: “Luckily the money we raised was safe and already passed on to the charity. We try to do a lot for the local community.
“This is the second time this has happened and I’m going to put an alarm in and the CCTV will be connected to my house next time.”
A police spokesman said: “Police are investigating following a break-in to Dalgety Fish Bar between 11pm on July 20 and 9.20am on July 21 where a quantity of cash was taken from within. Inquiries are continuing and anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101.”
