Mrs Hilton took picutres of the damage to the bus after the collision.

A Fife MSP had a lucky escape when a car ploughed into the side of the bus she was travelling on.

Cara Hilton, MSP for Dunfermline, suffered suspected whiplash in the crash between Rosyth and Inverkeithing on Monday evening.

The Labour MSP was the only passenger left on the Stagecoach service when the accident happened just after 5.30pm near Bellknowes Industrial Estate.

She said the Citroen car smashed into the front doors of the bus causing considerable damage.

“Bits of the car were inside the bus and the registration plate landed right at my feet,” she said.

“I had to duck to avoid the shrapnel.”

She added: “I wasn’t hurt but if I’d been sitting at the front it might have been a different story.

“I was the only person left on board but a few elderly people had just got off. I dread to think what might have happened if they’d still been on.

“Anyone sitting down the front would have been in danger.”

Mrs Hilton had been travelling from a meeting to collect her car at Inverkeithing railway station when the accident happened.

She told The Courier she was feeling a bit sore but was in work.

“I’m a bit shaken up. I could see it happening in slow motion. The bus driver reacted quickly and tried to avoid the collision but the car was coming too fast.”

The driver of the bus was trapped in his cab after the crash and had to climb out the window.

Mrs Hilton was helped out by another motorist who stopped to help.

“I do think I’ve got a bit of whiplash but hopefully not serious,” she said.

“I’m just thankful no-one was injured or worse.”

A police spokesman said the accident caused some traffic delays but the road remained open.

“The fire and ambulance service were also in attendance but there was no sign of any injuries,” he said.
