Scheme breathes new life into Fife’s empty buildings

A long-empty Kirkcaldy building is to be brought back to life.
Bernard Adam has been given the first Fife Council empty homes loan, a scheme to help owners improve buildings that have been vacant for a long time and need extensive repairs so they can be let.
Mr Adam will now convert the large flat above the Feuars Arms, which has been empty since 2007, into two homes.
As part of the loan agreement, the rent will be lower than mid-market.
Mr Adam said: “These funds will help refurbish our property which has been empty for so long.”
Housing spokeswoman, Councillor Judy Hamilton added: “It’s really good to see an empty property being brought back into use as a home for an individual or a family.
“The council is keen to encourage empty home owners to bring their properties back into use, to increase the supply of housing in Fife and particularly to help tackle the shortage of affordable housing.”
