A Tayport man who stabbed stabbed a woman in a random attack shortly after being released from prison has been sent back to jail.

Robbie Lowther, 23, had been talking to his victim Morbheinn McTavish outside the Tayport Arms on January 2 and told her he had recently spent time in jail.

He then followed her from the pub later in the evening and attacked when she and a friend split up on their route home.

Ms McTavish was left with an injury to her liver as a result of the attack on the town’s Craig Road.

She managed to walk home before being taken to Ninewells Hospital by her mother for treatment.

The High Court in Edinburgh heard Ms McTavish had been badly affected by the trauma.

The attack left her with permanent scarring and she requires follow-up checks on how her liver is healing.

Lowther, of Cross Street, had previously admitted assaulting the woman to her severe injury, permanent disfigurement and to the danger of her life.

Lord Uist today sentenced him to six years and eight months in prison.
