Almost 50 Fife families were inspired by a close encounter with the ultimate prize in golf.
The iconic Claret Jug soon to be presented to the champion golfer of the year at this year’s Open tournament was on display during a competition at a range in the region.
A total of 48 pairs took part in the Little and Large Open at Wellsgreen, near Windygates, with the top six taking home a variety of Open-themed prizes donated by the R&A.
The adult-and-child format took place over a 740-yard, six-hole, short course.
Taking top spot were father and son Jack and Bob Lockhart with a score of 43.
They were presented with their prizes by Duncan Weir, the R&A’s executive director working for golf.
In second place were Fraser Binnie and Alan Ewing with a score of 44.
The silver Claret Jug or to give it its proper name, the Golf Champion Trophy will be presented to the winner of the 144th Open at St Andrews in eight weeks’ time.
The success of the Open helps fund golf development work around the world and Wellsgreen Golf Range was given a grant to help build an improved putting and pitching practice facility.
More than 200,000 people are expected to attend the Open from July 12-19 and spectators have a few days left to buy tickets at early-season prices.
Practice day tickets for adults are available from £10 and children aged under 16 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult on both practice and championship days. Since free child admissions was introduced in 1997, more than 250,000 under-16s have attended the competition free of charge.
