One of Dunfermline Athletic’s longest serving players, Eric Bakie, has died aged 87.
An accomplished footballer of the 1950s, he played for Aberdeen, Dunfermline and later St Johnstone.
He played part-time while holding down a job in the civil service and trained in the evenings.
Mr Bakie was offered a contract with Arsenal in 1949 and he considered a move to London for work reasons but the move did not materialise and he singed for Aberdeen instead.
Despite playing for the Dons he continued to live in Edinburgh and trained at Easter Road, only meeting his team-mates on Saturdays.
The left half found it difficult to hold down a first-team place while on a part-time contract and after two seasons he was given a free transfer to Dunfermline.
He stayed with the Pars for six seasons and was their joint longest serving player, along with Ron Mailer.
He was invited back to East End Park in 1985 for Dunfermline’s centenary game against Aberdeen and was reunited with old team-mates including Mailer, George Peebles and Charlie Dickson.
Mr Bakie signed for St Johnstone in 1957 and spent a season at the old Muirton Park in Perth.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, children Kenneth and Elaine and several grandchildren.
