A teenager has died and another is fighting for his life in an early morning road crash on the outskirts of Kirkcaldy.
Brian Phimister, of Kirkcaldy, died at the scene after the BMW 3 Series car smashed into a tree on the A966 between Dysart and Coaltown of Wemyss at about 12.50am today.
The 16-year-old, who was a passenger, was pronounced dead at the scene, while the 18-year-old male driver suffered what police described as “serious” injuries and was taken to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for further treatment.
It’s understood the driver’s injuries, whilst serious, are not thought to be life threatening.
No other vehicles were involved.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: “Enquiries into the full circumstances surrounding this incident are ongoing and anyone who can assist Road Policing Officers with their investigation is asked to contact police immediately.”
Two fire engines from Methil were summoned to help police officers at the scene.
The road was closed this morning between the two villages, meaning drivers had to divert via the Standing Stane Road in either direction.
Inspector Brenda Sinclair said: “This was a serious road traffic collision in which a 16-year-old lost his life and my sincere condolences go to Brian’s friends and family.
“Our officers are currently pursuing various lines of enquiry to establish the full circumstances surrounding this collision and I’d urge anyone who can help with our investigation to come forward.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
