A Glenrothes park has become the latest illegal base for a group of Travellers.
Around half a dozen caravans and associated vehicles arrived at the Gilvenbank Park car park, in the north of the town, late last week.
The Courier has been contacted by one member of the community who said that the group had been using a nearby children’s play park to hang washing.
“They have made an appalling mess there,” said the resident, who did not wish to be named.
“It would put off anybody who wants to go to the park.”
The site was quiet when The Courier visited yesterday, although a number of chairs had been left out in the car park alongside some of the caravans, making parking for members of the public virtually impossible.
Fife Council yesterday stated it was aware of the illegal camp and had already initiated legal proceedings to have the group removed.
Alan Russell, senior manager for housing condition and supply at the local authority, said: “We’re aware of the unauthorised Gypsy Traveller encampment at Gilvenbank Park in Glenrothes.
“We served notice to the Travellers on Friday July 3 and will serve the eviction order on Tuesday as soon as we’ve received it from the court.”
This incident is just the latest to occur in Glenrothes this summer.
Last month more than a dozen caravans established an illegal camp at Foxton Meadows, in the south of the town.
Council officers took legal action to remove the group, with the chairman of the community council claiming that bushes had been used as toilets.
