Spieth, Woods, Watson, Oosthuizen
Just some of the many famous names involved in the Open at St Andrews this year.
But perhaps the most famous voice belongs to official starter Ivor Robson.
The man with that familiar, lively, high-pitched tone that introduces the players at the Open will be manning his position on the first tee for the final time today.
Ivor, who has wielded the Open first-tee mic since 1975 at Carnoustie, will retire from the post after the Claret Jug is awarded.
He has made the phrase ‘On the tee’ his own.
In 40 previous Opens, Ivor, who handles similar duties for the European Tour, has never missed a tee time.
But he has decided he “can’t go on forever” and that there is no better place to do it than at the Home of Golf.
He said: “I don’t have time to think about how it’s going to feel when I finish. I have a job to do here. I’ve got to concentrate.
“They are coming up the first fairway or up the 18th and you’ve got to try and dovetail them to stick to time.
“You can’t put them off too early and you can’t put them off too late. You are just stuck with it.”
Ironically despite being involved in every game, Ivor sees very little golf.
His unique position means he watches every first tee shot but little else.
Ivor, of Moffat, will finish the season with the European Tour through its Race to Dubai.
