Forensic teams have removed skeletal remains found in a Glenrothes park.
Police teams were in Riverside Park throughout Wednesday, working behind a cordon in woodland near the River Leven.
Due to conditions at the site, removal of the bones has taken longer than initially hoped.
However, with the extraction process complete the remains will now be studied in a lab environment to help identify the individual.
Following the discovery by a group of youngsters on Tuesday afternoon, a number of local families who have reported missing relatives have been informed of developments.
Among those is Maryanne Jones from Glenrothes, whose son Kenneth disappeared from the family home in Ancrum Court in November 1998.
She has told The Courier that she has been living in a trance since her son left without taking any possessions and without having any clue as to where he may now be.
The discovery also comes as police search for two other missing local men – Allan Bryant Jnr, who would now be 25, missing since November 2013, and Wayne Fleming, 39, who has not been seen for at least five months.
