Demolition of the old Cupar Police Station is under way.
Fife Council has given assurances that although the work on the Carslogie Road property will involve removal of asbestos, there is no risk to the public.
Ross Tulloch, from the council’s property services, said: “We are currently setting up the demolition site at the former police station in Cupar.
“We aim to start asbestos removal and soft strip works timber, pipework, sanitary fittings, etc by the end of the week and anticipate that works should take around six weeks.
“A detailed asbestos survey of the premises has been carried out to identify all asbestos-containing materials present. The asbestos removal works are being carried out by a specialist contractor who is fully licensed to work with asbestos-containing materials and will be done in accordance with all relevant statutory legislation, as well as the latest Health and Safety Executive guidelines and procedures.
“There is no risk to the public or the workers from these operations.”
Concerns were raised by Carslogie Road resident Bill Ferrier, 66, who said neighbours were given no prior warning of the demolition work.
“I think they should have had the courtesy to tell people,” he said.
The town’s police station in now located in the County Buildings.
