A Glenrothes football club is building for the future after unveiling ambitious plans for its new clubhouse.

Glenrothes Strollers are close to blowing the final whistle on a £750,000 fundraising drive for the building.

With the last push under way, the club have unveiled the first images of the state-of-the-art facility after requesting planning permission for their Overstenton Park home.

Strollers chairman John Buchanan said that the club’s current facilities were simply not fit for purpose.

As news is awaited of a bid for funding from sportcotland, Mr Buchanan said that the new building could be in place within 12 months.

“At the moment we have some old cabins where the players get changed. It’s just horrible.

“With the sportcotland funding we should be at about £700,000.”

With a planning application now submitted, he added: “If we get permission then building could start in January and be ready for the summer.”

The Strollers and their legendary co-founder Joe McCafferty are something of a Glenrothes institution, with more than 500 players of all ages on their books.

While there are the traditional teams for local boys, the club have expanded in recent years and also coach teams of girls and players with disabilities.

Despite growing membership, the club have been operating out of storage containers for a number of years.

With the outcome of the sportcotland funding application awaited, hopes are high that the Strollers can offer facilities that reflect the club’s standing in the town.

“We’re not quite there yet but we are confident,” added Mr Buchanan. “We are still about £50,000 short but we are still working hard to raise that.

“If anybody is wanting to support us then I would ask them to please get in touch. The club has already had great support from the local business community.

“Some of them have given us contributions of around £5,000, which has been a huge help, but if anybody else wants to support us then I would ask them to get in touch as there is still time.”
