No one was hurt in the blaze, which started in a bedroom of the upstairs property in Links Street. However, the road was closed for several hours while emergency services dealt with the incident. A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said there was no working smoke alarm in the flat, which would have provided an earlier alert. It is believed that a passer-by rang 999 after seeing smoke at around 4.45pm on Tuesday. The cause of the fire is yet to be established but station manager Steve Michie said it was accidental. He added: “We would like to remind everyone of the importance of having working smoke alarm. “In this instance there was none and we could have been alerted earlier to the fire.” Three appliances from Kirkcaldy and Methil and an ambulance attended. Firefighters remained on the scene until after 10pm, checking for hot spots and ventilating the property. None of the other flats in the block were occupied at the time. The road was cordoned off between the Philp Hall and the shops halfway along Links Street.
