A Fife man who fell asleep at the wheel of his car and collided head-on with a service bus has been fined.
Passengers on the bus were injured when the 4×4 driven by William McKean careered on to the wrong side of the road and smashed into the bus.
He told police he had fallen asleep and thought this was because he had been working 12-hour shifts and was on painkilling medication.
William McKean, 62, of Kirktoun Gardens, Ballingry, admitted that on September 22 last year on the B920 main road in Glencraig he drove dangerously, lost control of his vehicle, entered the opposing carriageway and collided with a public service vehicle, causing damage to both vehicles and injury to passengers of the bus.
Depute fiscal Jade Doig told Dunfermline Sheriff Court that at around 3.50pm a bus driver was on his route travelling towards Ballingry.
McKean was driving a Mitsubishi 4×4 accompanied by a friend in the passenger seat.
A passenger on the bus pressed the button to get off and the driver was slowing down at a bus stop near to Manse Road.
“All of sudden the accused swerved across the carriageway directly in front of the bus. The driver of the bus braked sharply but there was an impact,” said Ms Doig.
“The accused collided head-on with the bus. As a result, the accused’s vehicle was thrown on to the driver’s side, coming to rest at a 45-degree angle against a wall.”
The passenger who had stood up to get off at the bus stop was thrown forward as a result of the impact and sustained an injury to her ribs, Ms Doig added.
McKean, an installation and maintenance engineer, appeared without a solicitor.
Sheriff Charles MacNair said: “Driving while overtired is very dangerous and this demonstrates why that is so.”
He fined McKean £600 and disqualified him for 16 months.
