A Dunfermline dad got a shock on his early-morning drive to work when he had a head-on collision with a runaway tyre.
Paul Schofield had no time to react when the rogue tyre came rolling out of the morning gloom and smashed into his car as he travelled at 50mph.
The 32-year-old NHS manager couldn’t believe it when he pulled over to find the tyre was still lodged in his grille.
A shaken Paul was heading for the Kincardine Bridge, going through Devilla Forest to his work in Stirling, just after 7.15am.
He said: “It was still dark on the road and everyone had their lights on when suddenly, out of the glare of the other side of the road, a tyre came rolling towards me.
“I had no time to react. Initially, I thought it was some animal but it was just before I hit it that I knew it was a tyre.
“There was a big thump but then nothing else. I looked in the mirror to see if it had come out the other side but the car behind me didn’t have a problem.”
Paul drove on for 200 metres before pulling over to assess the damage.
“That’s when I realised the tyre was stuck in the grille of my car,” he said. “I tried to pry it out but it was not budging.
“I decided to go home rather than drive on the motorway with the tyre attached to the car.”
However, the pain did not end there as he was hit with a £170 damage bill.
Paul added: “The tyre fell out close to home and I drove over it. I have no idea where it came from but somebody’s missing a tyre somewhere.”
