A senior Fife SNP councillor has insisted that the region should resist the urge to increase council tax in April and accused Fife’s Labour administration of overstating the current financial case.
David Alexander, the SNP group’s finance spokesman, conceded that Fife is facing a “major funding crisis” over the coming year but stressed that Labour’s attempt to blame the full financial impact on the Scottish Government was “plainly ridiculous”.
Mr Alexander was speaking following the publication of the Labour administration’s draft budget proposals on Tuesday which highlighted that a 7.51% council tax rise could bring in more than £7 million to help balance the books.
Mr Alexander said: “For Fife to gain an additional income of £7 million, the council will have to charge the people of Fife almost £12 million,” he noted, saying it was the “wrong time” to do so.
