A Fife pub is holding an event on Friday to help the family of Sheku Bayoh fund their legal bid as they strive to find out exactly what happened to the “much loved” 31-year-old who died in mysterious circumstances on Sunday.
Blue Mondays 80s Bar on Kirkcaldy High Street, where Mr Bayoh worked between 2006 and 2008, will host the event from 8pm until 3am and members of the public have been been invited to attend via the Justice for Sheku Ahmed Tejan Bayoh Facebook page set up by family and friends of the Kirkcaldy man.
The father-of-two, who is originally from Sierra Leone, died after being arrested on Sunday morning in circumstances which remain unexplained.
Sources have suggested he may have been the victim of positional asphyxiation while being restrained by up to 15 police officers and an investigation by the Police Investigations and Review Commissioner (PIRC) is now under way.
The family’s solicitor Aamer Anwar said it was “unaccceptable” that Mr Bayoh’s family had been given several different accounts of the circumstances leading to his death.
A post on the Justice for Sheku Facebook page reads: “On behalf of the family and friends of Sheku Bayoh, Blue Monday will be hosting a fundraising event on Friday May 8 from 8 pm – 3 am.
“Justice for Sheku…will receive 100% of all proceeds to help with legal costs and other expenses to get to the truth of what happened to Sheik on the morning of Sunday May 3.”
The post also thanks members of the public for their “continued support”.
The event on Friday is expected to attract a large public presence following a public memorial service in memory of Mr Bayoh earlier this week which was attended by 200 people.
Further details on the event as well as a link to a fundraising page is expected to be posted on the Facebook page soon.
