A Kirkcaldy family have been spooked by a ghostly apparition in a family photograph.
Mya Pitcairn was playing happily in front of the television when the snap was taken at the end of February.
The 18-month-old was visiting her great-grandparents’ home on Ramsay Road when her grandfather was testing out a new camera he had bought.
When the family reviewed the image of the toddler, they were shocked to notice what appeared to be the outline of a young girl standing next to the tot.
Great-grandfather Sandy Hall, 58, said his family had been left mystified by the ghostly image.
“It was just a normal, manic Saturday,” he told The Courier. “Mya was sitting and playing and the photograph was taken.
“It was only when my son was looking back at it that he asked me to take a look and we saw this person next to her.”
The mysterious outline prompted much confusion among the family, who were at a loss to explain the child-like figure standing next to Mya.
The camera was new, as was the memory card, with Mr Hall saying that no other pictures of the youngster had been taken beforehand.
“To be honest I don’t know what it is,” he continued. “It’s definitely a person but it doesn’t look anything like my great-granddaughter.
“It looks like a christening gown that the girl is wearing.”
Mr Hall said he had never before been aware of any eerie activity occurring at his house in the town’s west end.
He is now appealing for people to come forward with any explanation as to what the image could be, or how the family snap could have come to feature the mysterious figure.
“I know that my house was built in the 1930s, so it could be somebody that has died here or anything,” he added.
“Mya is such a happy little girl. You could go anywhere in the country and you wouldn’t find a happier little girl. The whole thing is just weird.”
A SIMPLE ANSWER?
Occam’s razor is the principle that states the simplest solution to any scientific problem is probably the right one, writes John Price, picture editor.
As a rule of thumb it’s quite a good one, and it can be applied to phenomena such as this spooky picture.
Is this likely to be a visitation from the next world, or bit of distorted light in the lens?
Is this more likely to be proof of life after death, or a double exposure?
Is this an apparition from another dimension, or a glitch?
I would advise that the simplest explanation is normally the correct one.
