A Fife tot, whose rare cancer developed while she was still in the womb, is a source of inspiration for her devoted mum.
Amanda Gray admits she will struggle to hold back the tears at the Race for Life finish line in Kirkcaldy’s Beveridge Park next month.
For younger daughter Amelia, three, has had the battle of her young life against rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma.
Now, after being given the all-clear, the bubbly youngster is able to play with big sister Rhian and start nursery.
And as mum Amanda makes her way around the 10k course on June 28 to raise money for Cancer Research UK, she’ll think back at how far her precious little one has come.
Amelia’s recovery is everything Amanda and dad Chris could have hoped for after last September’s devastating diagnosis.
Amanda, 38, said: “Amelia was only two-and-a-half at the time and it was explained to us that she’d probably been born with the neuroblastoma, that in fact she’d had it as an embryo even before she was born.
“It was heartbreaking to look at our perfect little girl and think that all this time she’d been so ill, I cried for weeks.”
After a series of unsuccessfully-treated chest infections throughout 2013, it was discovered that Amelia had actually been suffering from a urine infection and then given a kidney scan.
Unusually, her left kidney could not be found. It was eventually picked up last July, in her pelvic region.
Two months later she also had a six-inch tumour removed and hemotherapy was recommended as a safeguard.
“It was so hard seeing Amelia lying there and being unable to do anything to help her,” said Amanda.
“She was so brave, after just about every chemo session she got a fever and had to be kept in isolation because her immune system was so compromised.
“She also developed C diff during one admission.”
Last month the Kirkcaldy family received the best news possible Amelia was cancer free.
She still has six months of oral medication ahead and over the next five years she will have regular check-ups.
“She’s our little fighter,” added Amanda.
